The Info

+ Author and artists sign ups for the fourth round will begin Wednesday, February 1st

+ Promotional banner post will be available on the mod account Monday, January 30th

+ Support comm will be up and running Monday, January 30th. Do not join. After sign ups, invites will be sent out.

+ Minimum word count has been dropped from 25,000 words to 20,000 words

+ Timeline for artists to make art has been increased by fifteen days

+ At the beginning of each month, starting April 1, we will have an author check in poll. If you miss two monthly check-ins in a row, you will be dropped from the big bang.

+ Your fic must be from a sci-fi or fantasy based fandom/original world. (I'm pretty open when it comes to what fits under the umbrella. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.)

+ Your story will need to be beta-read.
- You are more than welcome to use your own beta (whether they are on LJ or not).

What are the requirements for a fic?
A fic must be at least 20,000 words and beta read before posting. A rough draft must be completed before the due date indicated above. The 20,000 words can be split in chapters or as linked stories at the discretion of the author.

What are the requirements for art?
After artist claiming, artists are required to create at least one piece of art for their fic. More than one piece of art is not required, but an artist can make as much art for their assigned story. Art should be created specifically for the piece the artist chooses. Posters, banners, icons, wallpapers, manips, digital art, drawings, paintings, vids, fanmixes...all are acceptable forms of art. If you're unsure if your style of art qualifies, don't hesitate to ask a mod.

What fandoms are acceptable?
Any fandom that has a science fiction or fantasy element. If you're unsure if your fandom meets that requirement, ask a mod.

Are crossovers allowed?
Yes. As long as one of the fandoms is rooted in sci-fi/fantasy, crossovers are awesome.

Can I use a WIP?
Yes, but you still need to write another 25k (more or less) to the story. It's not fair if you only have 500 more words and then sign up for the challenge. Also, no posting additonal parts to your story during the writing period. It is also acceptable if part of the WIP is written, but you cannot post anymore chapters until the deadline.

Can I sign up to be an author and an artist?
Absolutely. You can sign up across as many fields (author, artist, beta, alpha) as you feel you can handle.

Can I write a Real Person fic?
Sorry, but this challenge is only open to the awesome characters in the sci-fi/fantasy fandom.

Can I write a sequel or prequel to a previous fanfic?
Of course!

Can I write an AU where characters from a non-sci-fi/fantasy fandom are thrown into a sci-fi/fantasy universe? (i.e. How I Met Your Mother cast on a space station)
Yes, as long as there are distinct details that make it sci-fi/fantasy (changing the name of a city to a space station name but keeping everything else the same isn't going to fly).

Can I write an original fic?
Absolutely as long as it fits into the sci-fi/fantasy realm, you're set!

I signed up to write Fandom A, but now I want to write Fandom B. Can I switch?
Yes. Just make sure to let a mod know.

Can I write more than one story?
As many as you think you will be able to finish!

Just put both names in the sign-up!

What is required for check-ins/summaries/rough drafts?
Check-ins consist of a simple yes or no poll: Do you still intend to participate? That's it. You don't need to hit a specific word count at any check-in. For summaries, we just need you to basically intice an artist to choose your story. It does not have to be summary you use for your story when posting begins. When rough drafts are due, you must either have a complete outline of your story (how you outline your story is up to you) or have 10,000 words of your story written.

If you have any questions, leave a comment here or email at scifibigbangmod [at] gmail [dot] com.
I hope to see y'all at the sign ups! :D :D

in the last year? pretty quiet for sci-fi, Game of Thrones is the obvious biggie, but American Horror Story and Once Upon a Time are nice enough :)

SourceCode was a nifty flick.

edit: d'oh! Rise of the Planet of the Apes - also pretty big.

Thanks! I wasn't sure about Game of Thrones because I didn't know if it had fantasy elements, so thanks for the head's up! And thank you for the other suggestions! :D:D

Does the Avengers fandom count as scifi/fantasy?
You got Norse gods and super soldiers and Hulk and stuff.
I'd rather write in (mostly) canon, so if I can I'll definitely be signing up.

Oh, absolutely. I count any and all super heroes under the "sci-fi/fantasy" umbrella.

And \o/ for Avengers fic! :D :D

Can I sign up now if I don't know the fandom/story I'm writing with? I can't decide just yet and I don't want to lose track of time and miss out on the sign-up period.
scifibbmod: Excited[personal profile] scifibbmod on February 6th, 2012 09:48 pm (UTC)
Absolutely! Under fandom just say "undecided." Just let us know as soon as you've made up your mind :D

I... really shouldn't sign up because I'm TERRIBLE at big bangs, but just in case I suddenly go crazy or anyone else wonders (since I'm about to link on twitter. I'm not an enabler, nooooo. *cough*), what's the stance on, say, using the Killjoys 'verse? It's technically RPF in that it's a role-play 'verse My Chemical Romance came up with and then used for the video setting for two singles off their last album - but it's a post-apocalyptic Killjoys-versus-the-world setting where it's roughly ackowledged that the Killjoys aren't strictly MCR. (Also, I think there's going to be a Killjoys comic? So I'm REALLY not sure where the line falls. MCR: pushing your boundaries!)

Also, RPF AUs where the setting is more sci-fi/fantasy than real world: acceptable/not?

Hi there!

Sorry it has taken a couple of days to respond. RL and all that madness, LOL. Anyway, onto the answers...

Re: the Killjoys' verse. If you are basing a story off a world based on this explanation then that's no problem. A story about MCR creating/talking about the Killjoys 'verse isn't going to work.

Re: RPF AUs. Are you talking about something like Elijah Wood is captain of a starship with his trusty crew of Commander Sean Astin, Chief Engineer Billy Boyd and CMO Dominic Monaghan? I'm pretty sure that question has been answered and I went with a no. However, if you want to create an original fic and "cast" the actors as your OCs (i.e. Elijah Wood is Captain Awesome) then that isn't a problem.

If you have any other questions, let me know. Thanks!

I had a quick question about your posting rules. I've been thinking about signing up with one of my original sci-fi stories. (My fanfic muses seem to have all fled the scene the last couple of years) I normally don't post my original work except for on my original writing/professional journal, which is semi-friends only. Is it acceptable to post links here and/or on the LJ comm that go to my writing journal or do I need to post directly on this comm?
(my writing journal is [personal profile] rosebfischer, btw, I'd sign up with that account.

No need to post directly to the comm...as long as it's open to the public then it's fine. :D

All right, thanks. Signed up last night in case. I'll leave any posts related to the Big Bang story open then, when I make them. I might go back and f-lock them later, after the challenge is over (long enough that anybody's who's going to want to read an original novella for fun would've had the chance--say next year or something?) only because it's a verse I'd like to publish in someday. Would that be a problem? Don't mean to be a pest, I'd just rather ask now than do something problematic later.
scifibbmod: Writing[personal profile] scifibbmod on March 11th, 2012 08:30 pm (UTC)
Sorry it's taken so long to respond to you! It's not a problem. Just if you are going to flock, please leave the posts open for at least one year and afterwards make a note on the original entry that the post goes to an flocked entry.
rosebfischer[personal profile] rosebfischer on March 12th, 2012 04:32 pm (UTC)
It's no problem at all. Thanks for getting back to me. I would do that anyway and anyone who wanted to read would still be friended so they could.
